What You Will Need to Apply
Required for a complete file.
AEGA Ordained Minister credential. Federal endorsing-agent paperwork (DoD, VA, BOP) requires Ordained Minister status. If you hold a Licensed Minister credential, apply for ordination first.
Senior pastor endorsement letter. A signed letter from the senior pastor of your home church confirming your call to chaplaincy and the congregation's support.
Chaplaincy track selection. Military, VA, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Hospital, Law Enforcement, Civil Air Patrol, or Board-Certified Chaplain.
Current or intended placement. The facility, command, hospital system, or board accepting your chaplaincy service.
Your AEGA credential ID. Assigned when your Ordained Minister credential was issued. Used to confirm standing and renewal status.
Three ministry references. Pastoral or credentialed-minister references. At least one current AEGA-credentialed minister preferred.

Frequently Asked
Chaplain endorsement application, answered.
How long does AEGA chaplain endorsement take?
Once your full file is received (application, senior pastor letter, three references, AEGA Ordained Minister credential confirmed), endorsement typically completes in three to five weeks. Files that arrive incomplete extend the timeline. The Endorsement Office acknowledges receipt within two business days so you know what is still outstanding.
Do I have to be ordained to apply for chaplain endorsement?
Yes. AEGA Ordained Minister status is required for endorsement across nearly all federal endorsing-agent paperwork (DoD, VA, Federal Bureau of Prisons). If you currently hold a Licensed Minister credential, apply for ordination first. The Ordained Minister credential is the highest credentialing tier AEGA issues. Ordained Minister credential →
Which chaplaincy tracks does AEGA endorse?
AEGA endorses chaplains across seven tracks: Military (DoD AFCB-recognized), Veterans Affairs, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Hospital, Law Enforcement, Civil Air Patrol, and Board-Certified Chaplain. Most endorsing bodies endorse only one specialty. AEGA carries chaplains across all seven.
Does AEGA stay on as my endorsing agent after the letter is issued?
Yes. AEGA serves as your endorsing agent for the duration of your chaplaincy service, not just for the initial endorsement letter. The Endorsement Office handles your annual chaplain report, any agency renewal paperwork, and ongoing accountability under the credential. If you change tracks (for example, from military to VA), the endorsement transfers within AEGA. AEGA is not a denomination. The covering is relational and continuous.
What if my senior pastor cannot write the endorsement letter?
Most chaplains have a clear sending church. If your circumstances are unusual (church transition, recently relocated, no current local-church covering), contact the Endorsement Office at 1-800-842-5176 before submitting. AEGA values relational covering and will work with you to identify a credentialed minister or pastoral authority who can speak to your call and standing.
